About the Role
Remember why you fell in love with coding in the first place? It probably was not about sitting in endless meetings or wrestling with bloated processes. At TeamSnap, we are building a sports and communication platform that takes the work out of play in youth sports, and we want our engineering culture to feel just as liberating. We are searching for a Staff Backend Engineer to join our fully distributed team. You will help scale systems that serve millions of daily users and tens of thousands of amateur sports organizations. Best of all? This is a fully remote, worldwide opportunity, meaning you can do impactful work from wherever you call home.
Overview
We believe your job should genuinely excite you, your teammates should have your back, and your leaders should inspire you every single day. That philosophy has earned us spots on Outside Magazine's list of Best Places to Work and Built In's 100 Best Remote-First Places to Work. As a hands-on Staff Backend Engineer, you will dive right into our tech stack featuring Node, TypeScript, Elixir, Ruby on Rails, SQL, cloud services, and event-driven architectures. You will not just write code; you will shape the technical direction of our platform while keeping big ideas front and center and tiny egos out of the room.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, scale, and continuously improve robust APIs and backend services that support millions of active users.
- Lead technical design discussions and architect solutions even when requirements are initially ambiguous.
- Troubleshoot, debug, and reason through complex production issues across our entire distributed system.
- Raise the overall quality bar across the engineering team through code reviews, best practices, and knowledge sharing.
- Actively mentor fellow engineers to help them grow in their technical capabilities and careers.
Requirements
We are looking for someone who brings deep technical expertise and a collaborative spirit to our remote environment. You should have extensive hands-on experience building distributed backend systems at scale using languages like Node, TypeScript, Elixir, or Ruby. Strong familiarity with SQL, event-driven systems, background jobs, caching layers, and observability tooling is essential. You must also excel at leading technical design initiatives, navigating ambiguous problems with confidence, and communicating effectively across a globally distributed team.
What You'll Gain
Working here means joining a supportive, remote-first culture that values work-life balance and personal growth. You will collaborate with talented peers who value your input and genuinely want to see you succeed. You will also enjoy the freedom of working from anywhere in the world while tackling complex scaling challenges that directly impact communities and youth sports organizations globally.
