Our product offering has grown extensively over the past decade, now encompassing personal and business bank accounts, joint accounts, options for younger users, free kids accounts, and credit cards in the UK, with much more innovation on the horizon. Beyond these, our UK customers can also save, invest, and combine their pensions with us. Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and implementation of highly scalable, resilient, and performant backend services that power Monzo's core products.
Drive technical strategy and architectural decisions for major features and platform improvements, ensuring long-term maintainability and innovation.
Mentor and guide other engineers, elevating the technical capabilities and best practices across multiple teams.
Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering leads to translate complex requirements into robust technical solutions.
Proactively identify and address performance bottlenecks, reliability concerns, and security vulnerabilities within our distributed systems.
Champion engineering excellence, advocating for high standards in code quality, testing, and operational practices.
Take ownership of significant system components or architectural domains, becoming a go-to expert within the organization.

Requirements

Extensive experience (typically 8+ years) in backend software engineering, with a proven track record of designing, building, and maintaining complex distributed systems at scale.
Deep expertise in at least one modern backend programming language, coupled with a strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design principles.
Demonstrable experience leading major technical projects from inception to deployment, involving cross-functional teams.
Proficiency in working with cloud environments (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) and a solid understanding of cloud-native architectures.
Strong problem-solving abilities and a pragmatic approach to overcoming challenging technical hurdles.
Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
