Now, we are channeling that expertise into new frontiers. Our New Ventures business unit is specifically tasked with researching, developing, and eventually scaling groundbreaking products and business lines designed to drive substantial long term growth for Toast. In this truly unique opportunity, you will step in as one of the very first engineers on a New Venture team. This means you will play a pivotal role in crafting solutions for new types of establishments, building fresh features from the ground up, all while strategically integrating with the existing Toast ecosystem. We have already seen an exciting level of interest in early conversations with potential operators, and our team is scrappy, motivated, and poised to capture this significant growth opportunity. This is a fully remote role, open to candidates worldwide, with options for hybrid work available at our Boston or New York offices.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop full stack solutions: Engineer, test, and deploy features across the entire application stack, from intuitive user interfaces to robust backend services and efficient database interactions.
- Drive architectural decisions: Contribute significantly to the technical design and architecture of new products, ensuring scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability from the outset.
- Collaborate cross functionally: Work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to understand requirements, define technical specifications, and deliver high quality, user centric solutions.
- Lead and mentor: Provide technical guidance, perform code reviews, and help cultivate a culture of engineering excellence within a fast growing team.
- Rapid iteration and prototyping: Thrive in an environment that values speed and agility, rapidly prototyping new ideas, gathering feedback, and iterating on solutions.

Requirements
- Significant professional experience: You possess 5+ years of experience in fullstack software development, demonstrating a track record of building and launching complex web applications.
- Fullstack proficiency: Strong command of modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue) and backend languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, Node.js), along with experience in RESTful APIs and database technologies (SQL and NoSQL).
- System design skills: Proven ability to design and implement scalable, distributed systems within a cloud environment (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
- Problem solving aptitude: You are an analytical thinker with excellent problem solving abilities, capable of tackling challenging technical issues in a dynamic startup like environment.
- Collaboration and communication: Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with a strong ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
