Overview

Monzo is redefining banking. We’ve grown significantly in the UK, offering a range of personal and business financial products, from joint accounts to credit cards, and even savings and investments. The Borrowing division is absolutely vital to our continued expansion and impact. This role offers you the chance to lead a talented team of Machine Learning specialists, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in lending. You will be instrumental in developing innovative strategies, building robust models, and scaling our borrowing products to new customer segments and markets. This is a fully remote, worldwide opportunity, allowing you to contribute to our mission from anywhere in the world.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and mentor a team of high performing Machine Learning Engineers and Scientists.
Define and execute the ML strategy for Monzo’s borrowing products, aligning with overall business goals.
Drive the development, deployment, and monitoring of advanced machine learning models for credit risk, fraud detection, affordability assessments, and personalized lending.
Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and risk teams to integrate ML solutions seamlessly into our products.
Ensure the ethical and responsible application of ML, maintaining fairness and transparency in all decisions.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and technical excellence within the team.
Communicate complex technical concepts and strategic directions effectively to both technical and non technical stakeholders.

Requirements

Significant experience in a leadership role within Machine Learning, ideally in a regulated financial services environment or a fast growing tech company.
Deep expertise in machine learning principles, algorithms, and best practices, with a strong understanding of their application in credit risk, lending, or similar domains.
Proven track record of building, deploying, and managing production grade ML systems at scale.
Exceptional ability to lead, inspire, and develop a team of highly skilled ML professionals.
Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate business objectives into actionable ML initiatives.
Excellent communication skills, capable of influencing senior stakeholders and simplifying complex technical information.
Proficiency in relevant programming languages (e.g., Python) and ML frameworks.
