As a Senior Android Engineer, you will play a pivotal role, owning our native Android application, which serves as the primary gateway for kids to dive into books on Android phones, tablets, and Chromebooks. This is a fully remote position, open to talented individuals anywhere in the world, joining our passionate, fast-paced global team dedicated to creating products that genuinely impact children's education and literacy.

Key Responsibilities

Take full ownership of the Epic Android app, guiding its evolution across phones, tablets, and Chromebooks.
Lead the development and enhancement of our core reading experience, including our custom in-house page renderer, fluid page-flip animations, precise zoom capabilities, and intuitive gesture controls.
Ensure seamless integration and synchronization of the Read-to-Me audio feature, enriching the interactive reading experience.
Collaborate closely with our Android, iOS, backend, and web engineering teams, as well as the broader US engineering group, to deliver a cohesive product experience.
Contribute to architectural decisions and maintain a high standard of code quality within our large, mature Kotlin codebase, which also includes some Java and XML UI layouts.
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, sharing best practices and fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
Actively identify and implement performance improvements, ensuring a smooth and responsive application for all users.

Requirements

At least 5 years of professional experience in Android application development, with a strong portfolio showcasing complex projects.
Deep expertise in Kotlin development; familiarity with Java and XML UI layouts is also valuable.
Demonstrated experience owning and evolving a significant native Android application.
Proven ability to design and implement custom UI components, animations, and gesture handling.
Solid understanding of Android's lifecycle, architecture components, and performance optimization techniques.
Experience working independently on technical challenges while also partnering effectively with cross-functional teams.
Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and addressing technical debt.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
