Overview

The Principal Engineer for Mobile is a pivotal role, operating at the intersection of deep technical execution and broad organizational influence. You will resolve the most challenging architectural questions, establish the gold standard for AI-native engineering, and ensure that iHerb's platform decisions create compounding value over time, rather than accumulating technical debt. Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, this role demands close collaboration with peer Principals, Engineering Managers, and other VPs across our organization. You will take complete ownership of the end-to-end technical strategy for iHerb's mobile platform, encompassing both iOS and Android applications used by millions of customers globally. A major part of this role involves leading our mobile modernization efforts, driving critical platform and architecture decisions, and setting a high technical bar for our entire Mobile team. This is a fully remote, worldwide opportunity, allowing you to contribute from wherever you are.

Key Responsibilities

Define and own the mobile platform's core architecture, including strategic platform choices, application structure, the shared component strategy, and patterns for native versus cross-platform development.
Lead the technical scoping and execution of our mobile modernization initiatives, coordinating effectively with the Mobile Engineering Manager and various cross-functional partners.
Contribute hands-on to our codebase by writing production mobile code, developing proofs of concept, and rigorously validating architectural designs.
Guide the mobile team toward an AI-native engineering approach, integrating intelligence and learning throughout our applications.
Act as a key technical leader and mentor, elevating the skills and practices of the entire mobile engineering team.
Collaborate strategically with product, design, and other engineering teams to align mobile technical direction with broader company goals.
Proactively identify and address potential technical debt, ensuring the long-term health and scalability of our mobile platforms.

Requirements

Extensive experience in mobile application development, demonstrating deep expertise in both iOS and Android platforms.
Proven track record as a Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, or similar senior leadership role, particularly in driving large-scale architectural initiatives.
Exceptional ability to define and communicate complex technical strategies to diverse audiences.
Strong hands-on coding skills with a commitment to producing high-quality, maintainable production code.
Experience leading and mentoring engineering teams, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation.
A strategic mindset with the ability to foresee future technical challenges and opportunities.
Demonstrated experience in modernizing legacy systems and building scalable, performant mobile applications for a global user base.
