The Opportunity: Instrumentation and Controls Engineer II - QIT

This pivotal role within our Quality, Inspection, and Testing (QIT) unit demands a blend of technical acumen, analytical prowess, and strong communication skills. As an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer II, you will play a crucial part in ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of complex systems, contributing directly to the success of critical projects.

Key Responsibilities: What You'll Do

Your day-to-day will involve a diverse range of responsibilities, focusing on both high-level oversight and in-depth technical execution:

  • Engineering Oversight: Evaluate and provide expert commentary on discipline engineering work performed by both internal teams and external contractors, ensuring strict adherence to project specifications, company standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strategic Execution: Facilitate the effective execution of discipline engineering and design routines, ensuring seamless alignment with project goals, objectives, and established procedures.
  • Communication Hub: Ensure accurate, timely, and transparent communication regarding discipline engineering activities, progress updates, and emergent issues among the Project Team and other Company functions.
  • Performance Analysis: Delve into maintenance records to ascertain instrument failure rates, conduct availability/reliability calculations, identify bad actors and failure modes, and analyze the effectiveness and cost efficiency of existing programs.
  • Process Control Development: Develop and expertly execute process control surveillance programs, enhancing operational stability and performance.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Collect and meticulously trend process data using the company’s extensive multiple process historian database and advanced visualization software tools, transforming raw data into actionable insights.
  • System Optimization: Perform comprehensive process control philosophy and stability reviews, coupled with the execution of precise control logic updates and fine-tuning of loops for optimal system performance.
  • Risk Management & Strategy: Conduct criticality assessments and develop robust equipment strategies and maintenance plans for instrumentation and control systems. This includes considering Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessments, industry best practices, regulatory mandates, and manufacturer recommendations.

Who We're Looking For: Skills & Qualifications

To excel in this role, you should possess a strong foundation in engineering principles and a proactive approach to problem-solving:

  • Educational Background: A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering specialty, combined with equivalent professional experience.
  • Technical Mastery: Strong knowledge of discipline design standards, specifications, codes, and appropriate safety criteria.
  • Hardware Expertise: Proven experience in the selection, application, and ISA data sheet specification of critical hardware, including pressure/temperature/level instruments, control valves, shutdown valves, and fire/gas detection systems.
  • Data Proficiency: Proficient in data collection and analysis, with hands-on experience using common database and software data analysis tools such as SAP, Analytics for Excel, and Tableau.
  • Adaptability: Demonstrated ability to adapt effectively to tight deadlines, manage heavy workloads, and navigate frequent changes in priorities while maintaining high-quality output.
  • Software Skills: Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of software programs.
  • Communication: The ability to read, write, and speak fluent English, especially crucial for technical and business communications.
