Overview

The Joint Commission is looking for a Healthcare Research Scientist who brings profound expertise in causal inference and healthcare data analytics. You'll be instrumental in advancing our ambitious enterprise-wide research and improvement agenda. We seek someone with a proven track record of applying rigorous statistical methods to real-world observational data, including electronic health records (EHRs) and administrative claims. Your work will generate actionable insights that directly support health system enhancement, inform our quality improvement strategy, and bolster public accountability. This role demands a knack for managing research partnerships and ensuring our external communications consistently align with The Joint Commission’s strategic goals and core mission. You will collaborate closely across our certification, accreditation, and performance measurement programs, expanding the organization's analytic capabilities to significantly promote quality in healthcare delivery. This is a fully remote, worldwide opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

Design and lead applied research studies. These studies will estimate associations and causal effects from non-randomized healthcare data.
Contribute significantly to The Joint Commission’s priorities in quality measurement, accreditation and certification evaluation, and system-level improvement initiatives.
Apply advanced statistical and econometric methods, including propensity score matching, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, and difference-in-differences, to address complex research questions.
Extract, clean, and analyze large, complex healthcare datasets from various sources, such as EHRs, claims, and clinical registries.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to define research questions, develop study protocols, and disseminate findings effectively.
Prepare and present research findings through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and internal reports.
Ensure the scientific rigor and ethical conduct of all research activities.
Mentor junior staff and contribute to building a strong research culture within the organization.

Requirements

An advanced degree, such as a Ph.D. or Sc.D., in a quantitative field. Relevant fields include biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research, economics, public health, or a related discipline.
At least 5 years of post-doctoral or equivalent professional experience in applied healthcare research.
Demonstrated expertise in causal inference methodologies and their practical application to observational healthcare data.
Proficiency in statistical programming languages like R, Python, or SAS.
Strong experience with large healthcare datasets, including EHRs, administrative claims, or clinical registry data.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for presenting complex findings to diverse audiences.
A proven ability to manage multiple research projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
