Finance Manager

Finance Manager, Fully Remote (Worldwide)

Imagine leveraging your sharp financial acumen to bolster an organization deeply committed to transforming our food systems and supporting vibrant local economies. Accelerating Appalachia, a leader in regenerative agriculture, is searching for a dedicated Finance Manager who shares our passion for creating a more sustainable future. This isn't just a numbers role; it's an opportunity to directly impact the fiscal health of a pioneering nonprofit, ensuring we can continue our vital work with underserved producers and growth-stage companies across the Southeast and Appalachia. If you thrive on precision, compliance, and strategic financial foresight, all while working from anywhere in the world, then this could be your next significant career step.

Overview

Accelerating Appalachia (ACAP), founded in 2013, champions the development of resilient regenerative supply chains and local economies across an eight-state southeastern region. We work directly with producers, particularly those identified as historically underserved by the USDA, connecting them with technical assistance, financial resources, and crucial market opportunities. Beyond supporting individual farmers, ACAP also accelerates regional growth-stage regenerative companies in food, fiber, and forest products. Our significant 2023 initiative, Building Appalachian Agricultural Resilience (BAAR), incentivizes regenerative practices across eight states, backed by an $18 million USDA Farmer Fund. As our Finance Manager, you will be pivotal in overseeing ACAP's overall fiscal health and ensuring the seamless operation of our financial systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meticulously manage ACAP's general ledger, overseeing all accounting functions and ensuring financial records are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Ensure comprehensive compliance with all federal and state grant requirements, particularly those related to the substantial USDA Farmer Fund, including financial reporting and documentation.
  • Develop and maintain robust financial forecasts for revenue, expenditures, and cash flow, providing strategic insights to leadership.
  • Advise on and implement sound financial policies and procedures, continually improving our internal controls and financial management practices.
  • Oversee the organizational budget, monitoring performance against targets and providing regular reports to the Executive Director and Board.
  • Manage cash flow efficiently, ensuring adequate liquidity for operations and strategic initiatives.
  • Prepare for and coordinate annual financial audits and grant-specific audits, serving as the primary point of contact for auditors.
  • Process payroll, manage vendor payments, and handle all incoming revenue streams.
  • Collaborate with program teams to ensure financial alignment with project goals and grant deliverables.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in financial management, ideally within a nonprofit organization or a grant-funded environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in grant compliance and reporting, particularly with federal grants (USDA experience is a strong plus).
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial software, and best practices in fiscal management.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to forecast, budget, and interpret complex financial data.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, capable of clearly conveying financial information to diverse stakeholders.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented approach with a commitment to accuracy and ethical financial stewardship.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a fully remote, distributed team environment.
  • A genuine interest in regenerative agriculture, sustainable development, or social impact initiatives is highly valued.

What You'll Gain

  • The profound satisfaction of contributing to an organization that makes a tangible difference in rural communities and environmental sustainability.
  • An opportunity to lead the financial operations of a rapidly growing nonprofit with significant federal funding.
  • Work within a passionate, mission-driven team dedicated to positive change.
  • Considerable autonomy and the chance to shape financial strategies and systems.
  • The flexibility and convenience of a fully remote role, allowing you to work from anywhere in the world.
  • Continuous professional growth in a dynamic and evolving sector.
