We are actively seeking a technical, hands-on, and infrastructure-minded Engineering Manager to spearhead our Notifications team, a critical part of the Growth organization. This fully remote, worldwide opportunity puts you at the helm of a full-stack team. You will own the entire lifecycle of our notification systems, from the foundational platform and infrastructure that powers every single alert Discord dispatches, to the sophisticated orchestration layer optimizing notifications across the globe, the intuitive in-app notification center, and the comprehensive user-facing settings and client experience. Your leadership will guide engineers operating business-critical systems responsible for fanning out messages to hundreds of millions of users, all while shipping the vital re-engagement surfaces that consistently bring them back to the platform. This position reports directly to the Senior Engineering Manager of Growth.

What You'll Be Doing

Lead a dynamic team of full-stack engineers in designing, building, and operating Discord's mission-critical notifications platform. This includes core backend services often utilizing technologies like Elixir and Python, along with robust database systems.
Drive the technical strategy and roadmap for all notification-related systems, ensuring they are scalable, reliable, and performant for our global user base.
Foster a culture of engineering excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement within your team.
Mentor and develop engineers, helping them grow their technical skills and careers through regular feedback, coaching, and challenging projects.
Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering teams across Discord to deliver cohesive and impactful user experiences.
Oversee the operation and health of business-critical systems that fan out notifications to hundreds of millions of users, ensuring high availability and swift incident response.
Contribute to architectural discussions and hands-on coding as needed, particularly in areas related to system design, performance optimization, and complex problem solving.
Champion user engagement by enhancing the in-app notification center and improving user-facing settings for a personalized experience.

Requirements

We believe you will thrive in this role if you bring:

Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or a similar leadership role, successfully guiding engineering teams to deliver complex, user-facing features and platforms.
Strong technical background with hands-on experience in building and operating large-scale distributed systems, ideally within a notifications or messaging domain.
Proficiency in backend development, with familiarity in languages like Elixir and Python, and experience with various database technologies.
Experience leading full-stack teams, encompassing both backend infrastructure and client-side experiences (web, mobile, desktop).
A solid understanding of system design, scalability challenges, and performance optimization in high-throughput environments.
Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, drive technical discussions, and foster a positive, productive team environment.
Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences and collaborating effectively with cross-functional partners.
