About JerseySTEM and This Opportunity
JerseySTEM is a grassroots 501(c) nonprofit organization passionately dedicated to bringing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education to 5th to 8th grade girls in New Jersey's underserved communities. Our mission is critical, focusing on improving access to STEM education and career pathways for these bright young minds.
We operate as a dynamic, mission-driven professional network of pro-bono contributors. Every role at JerseySTEM, including this one, is an unpaid volunteer position. Our members contribute their professional skills and leverage their networks in service of our gender equity agenda. We partner with socially responsible companies, their employees, youth organizations in underserved communities, and civic-minded college students and universities. Together, we develop and deliver innovative, hands-on, and online after school projects and inquiry-based learning opportunities that foster teamwork and critical thinking.
This is a fully remote opportunity, open to talented individuals located anywhere in the world. Membership entails a minimum six-month commitment, requiring approximately six flexible hours per week. A $100 refundable deposit is part of active membership, returned after six months of dedicated service. We waive this deposit for K–12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students.
Key Responsibilities
As our Corporate Writer, you will be instrumental in shaping JerseySTEM's voice and message across various platforms. Your daily contributions will help us communicate our impact and inspire support:
- Develop and draft compelling content for a range of organizational communications, including newsletters, press releases, website updates, and social media posts.
- Craft persuasive donor appeals, grant proposals, and annual reports to articulate our achievements and secure vital funding.
- Ensure all written materials consistently reflect JerseySTEM’s brand voice, mission, and values, maintaining a professional and engaging tone.
- Collaborate closely with other volunteer teams, including marketing, program development, and fundraising, to ensure cohesive messaging.
- Translate complex program details and impact stories into clear, concise, and inspiring narratives for diverse audiences.
- Edit and proofread internal and external communications to uphold the highest standards of grammar, clarity, and accuracy.
Requirements
We are seeking an individual who is not only a skilled writer but also deeply committed to our cause. To excel in this role, you should possess:
- Exceptional Writing and Editing Skills: A proven ability to produce clear, engaging, and error-free copy across various formats.
- Strong Communication: Adept at conveying complex ideas simply and effectively for diverse audiences.
- Passion for Mission: A genuine enthusiasm for STEM education and advancing gender equity for young girls.
- Commitment: The capacity to dedicate approximately six flexible hours per week for a minimum six-month period.
- Remote Work Proficiency: Comfort and familiarity with virtual collaboration tools and practices.
- Initiative and Collaboration: Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse, remote team.
- Understanding of Nonprofit Landscape: Previous experience or familiarity with nonprofit communications and fundraising is a plus.
