Overview

Ashby is actively expanding its Design Engineering department, growing from five specialists to more than ten over the coming year. Rather than treating this role as frontend development with fancy styling or design prototyping disconnected from reality, we view it as a unique discipline. Your visual decisions will directly inform data models, and your understanding of engineering constraints will produce simpler, more elegant user journeys across our product suite.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will bridge the gap between user experience vision and shipping code. Your typical work will involve several key pursuits.

Tackle our most challenging product problems by designing intuitive workflows and implementing them directly in production code
Elevate overall craft quality across the entire app, raising expectations for micro-interactions, layout polish, and visual consistency
Influence data structures and system architecture by understanding how frontend state impacts UX flexibility
Build and maintain accessible, flexible design system components used across engineering
Help define the evolving discipline of design engineering alongside engineering leadership

Requirements

We are looking for individuals who take genuine pride in both sides of software development. Successful candidates typically bring the following qualifications.

Proven track record of designing high-caliber web applications and bringing them to life through production-ready code
Fluency with modern web technologies, particularly TypeScript, React, HTML, and modern CSS practices
Strong product sense with an instinctive grasp of usability, information hierarchy, and user empathy
Deep appreciation for system-level thinking, component reusability, and front-end performance
Excellent written communication skills with the autonomy required to thrive in a distributed, asynchronous culture
