About the Role
Financial criminals work fast, but data science teams can work smarter. Monzo is looking for a Data Science Manager to lead our Financial Crime unit. In this role, you will guide a talented team of data scientists who build the models and systems protecting millions of people from fraud, scams, and money laundering. We care deeply about real-world impact, meaning the algorithms your squad deploys will directly stop bad actors from taking advantage of everyday account holders.
This position is open as a fully remote, worldwide opportunity. Whether you prefer working from a home office or your favorite quiet corner anywhere on the globe, you will be an integral part of Monzo's fight against financial wrongdoing.
Overview
Traditional banks often rely on outdated rulebooks and clunky manual checks to spot suspicious behavior. Monzo flips that script entirely. We use modern machine learning pipelines, vast real-time datasets, and quick feedback loops to stay one step ahead of sophisticated criminal networks. As our Data Science Manager for Financial Crime, you will balance people leadership, strategic technical guidance, and hands-on domain expertise. You will keep your team motivated, ensure our model performance remains exceptional, and collaborate closely with product managers, financial crime investigators, and platform engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Every day brings unique challenges, and your core duties include
- Leading, mentoring, and growing a high-performing group of data scientists focused on fraud detection, anti-money laundering, and risk assessment.
- Shaping the technical roadmap for financial crime data products, ensuring your team tackles high-value problems with rigorous scientific methods.
- Partnering with engineering leads and product owners to integrate machine learning models seamlessly into our live banking infrastructure.
- Advocating for robust experimental design, data ethics, and continuous evaluation across all deployed algorithms.
- Translating complex analytical findings and model behaviors into transparent insights for risk stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
- Fostering an inclusive team environment where people feel safe taking smart risks and learning from their experiments.
Requirements
To succeed in this role, you will bring a blend of technical mastery and thoughtful people management, including
- Demonstrated experience managing or technically guiding data science teams, preferably within fast-paced product environments.
- Strong grounding in statistical modeling, machine learning, and working with messy, large-scale transaction data.
- Prior exposure to financial crime prevention, fraud defense, AML monitoring, or related risk domains.
- Proficiency with modern data science tooling such as Python, SQL, and distributed compute frameworks.
- Clear communication skills that allow you to explain intricate mathematical concepts to both technical teammates and non-technical business partners.
- A genuine passion for coaching, developing careers, and helping others achieve their potential.
What You'll Gain
Joining Monzo means becoming part of a community that values fairness, transparency, and continuous learning. You will enjoy
- A competitive compensation package starting between £100,000 and £130,000, supplemented by performance-linked incentive awards.
- The autonomy to solve meaningful problems without bureaucratic red tape slowing you down.
- The flexibility of working remotely from anywhere in the world with genuine work-life balance.
- Comprehensive health and wellness benefits, alongside personal development support to advance your own career.
- The satisfaction of knowing your everyday efforts directly protect hard-working people and their money.
