Senior Projects Coordinator at International Rescue Committee (IRC)

Senior Projects Coordinator at International Rescue Committee (IRC)

Are you an experienced project management professional looking to make a lasting impact in the humanitarian sector? The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a highly skilled and strategic Senior Projects Coordinator to lead its Project Management Unit (PMU) for the Nigeria Country Program.

About the International Rescue Committee (IRC)

Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC is a globally respected humanitarian aid, relief, and development non-governmental organization. Working in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, the IRC provides critical emergency aid and long-term assistance to refugees and communities displaced by war, persecution, or natural disasters. In Nigeria, the IRC is actively delivering multi-sectoral programs to help displaced and vulnerable populations rebuild their lives and achieve self-sufficiency.

The Opportunity: Senior Projects Coordinator

As the Senior Projects Coordinator, you will provide strategic oversight of project implementation performance across the Nigeria country program portfolio. Reporting directly to the Deputy Director for Operations, you will lead the Project Management Unit (PMU) and play a vital role in ensuring that all projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in strict compliance with both IRC and donor standards.

This is a dynamic, multi-faceted leadership role that bridges the gap between technical, operational, and financial teams to ensure cohesive, data-driven programmatic execution.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will take charge of the following critical areas:

  • Leadership and Performance Oversight: Direct the PMU, supervise unit staff, and provide direct project management advice and capacity building to field implementation leadership. You will monitor the portfolio's progress against workplans, spending plans, and timelines, actively identifying and mitigating implementation risks.
  • Budget vs. Actuals (BvA) Coordination: Lead the country program's monthly BvA review process to maintain rigorous financial accountability. You will analyze spending trends, identify financial risks, coordinate deep-dive reviews, and manage central approval oversight for flexible grants.
  • Project Cycle Management (PCM): Organize and facilitate critical post-award project cycle meetings (such as implementation and closing meetings) in alignment with IRC guidelines, ensuring lessons learned are integrated into ongoing and future interventions.
  • Systems and Tools Optimization: Standardize and enhance key project tools (spending plans, procurement plans, activity trackers) using data platforms like Power BI to provide senior leadership with actionable insights.
  • Internal Coordination & Capacity Building: Resolve program bottlenecks by fostering inter-sectoral collaboration, and provide technical guidance and mentoring to Field Coordinators, Outcome Managers, and operational leads.
  • Staffing & Program Support: Contribute to workforce planning as part of the internal staffing review committee, and provide operational analysis during proposal development for new project designs.

Job Requirements

To succeed in this high-impact role, you should possess the following qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Development Studies, Political Sciences, or a related field.
  • Work Experience: 5+ years of active experience in project management, project coordination, or grants management within a structured environment.
  • Key Competencies:
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
    • Strong working knowledge of major humanitarian donors' rules, regulations, and reporting standards.
    • Highly proficient in analytical problem-solving and the Microsoft Office suite.
    • Excellent report writing, presentation, and communication skills.
    • Proven experience working in cross-functional, multicultural, and global team structures.

Working Environment

The role is based in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, with travel required to IRC field locations. Maiduguri operates within a volatile security environment (currently security level 3/orange), and a standard supportive office working environment is fully provided.
