The Role: Senior Database Engineer

As a Senior Database Engineer, you will own both the relational and distributed NoSQL database layers that sit at the absolute heart of the Heirs Insurance platform. In this high-impact position, you will ensure these layers are highly available, performant, secure, and ready to scale to hundreds of millions of users without architectural bottlenecking. Because data integrity, availability, and compliance are non-negotiable on a modern financial platform, you will lead the charge on one of the most critical systems in the organization.

Key Responsibilities: What You'll Do

Database Engineering & Design: Own the design, provisioning, and ongoing engineering of the relational (PostgreSQL) and distributed NoSQL (Apache Cassandra) database infrastructures across both AWS and Azure.
Relational & NoSQL Management: Manage Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Amazon RDS/Aurora, Azure Managed Instance for Apache Cassandra, and Amazon Keyspaces. Optimize schemas, indexing, partitioning, and replication.
High Availability & Disaster Recovery: Design robust disaster recovery pipelines with proven RTO and RPO targets. Ensure that no single point of failure can lead to data loss or downtime.
Cross-Cloud Active-Active Replication: Implement real-time data replication between AWS and Azure environments. Achieve active-active configuration where possible, or near-zero data loss active-passive failover.
Performance Engineering: Proactively run slow-query analysis, execution plan audits, connection pooling, and cache tuning to eliminate bottlenecks before they reach production.
Database Security & Compliance: Enforce top-tier security including AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, and strict IAM-based access. Maintain full alignment with PCI DSS and CBN compliance.
Database as Code (IaC): Provision and manage all infrastructure configurations programmatically using Terraform, Ansible, and Bash. No manual database provisioning is allowed.
Zero-Downtime Migrations: Plan and execute backward-compatible schema changes within CI/CD pipelines to guarantee zero production outages.

What We're Looking For

Must-Have Qualifications:

5+ years of hands-on database engineering experience in a production, cloud-native environment.
Expert-level PostgreSQL experience (schema design, partitioning, query optimization, replication).
Strong Apache Cassandra database modeling and cluster management experience.
Hands-on experience with managed cloud databases (AWS Aurora/Keyspaces, Azure PostgreSQL/Cassandra).
Solid understanding of database security, compliance (PCI DSS, CBN), and secret management.
Strong proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, Bash).
Proven record of executing zero-downtime database migrations.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications:

Experience utilizing Redis for caching, cluster mode configurations, and eviction policies.
Familiarity with event-driven architectures, event sourcing, and CQRS patterns.
Prior experience working in fintech, banking, or highly regulated data environments.
AWS or Microsoft Azure database certifications.
Deep knowledge of African market data residency and cross-border data transfers.
