Role Overview: National Security Officer
The National Security Officer will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of IOM personnel, assets, and operational activities within the Northeast Area (NEA) of Nigeria. Based in a dynamic field environment, the successful candidate will provide risk analysis, coordinate emergency preparedness, implement physical security measures, and liaise with key external security stakeholders, including the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS).
Key Responsibilities
As a National Security Officer, your core responsibilities will include:
- Stakeholder Coordination: Liaise and maintain strong security networks with the Area Security Advisor (ASA), UNDSS, UN Agency security focal points, and local government security services.
- Security Monitoring & Analysis: Monitor and analyze the security situation in the Northeast security area, providing timely assessments, verifying security information, and communicating critical events.
- Emergency Preparedness: Support the development and implementation of IOM-specific contingency plans, emergency response protocols, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Risk Assessment & Compliance: Support the execution of Security Risk Management (SRM) assessments, and conduct physical surveys of offices, vehicles, and residences to ensure compliance with UN Security Risk Management Measures (SRMM).
- Warden System Management: Manage the local Warden system, updating contact and call sign lists, and testing the operability of communication systems (particularly SCAAN).
- Reporting & Briefings: Prepare weekly reports and Security Incident Reports, and deliver comprehensive safety briefings for personnel travelling within the operational areas.
- Team Supervision: Provide technical guidance and supervise Field Security Associates stationed in the Northeast Area.
Required Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Education:- A University degree (Bachelor's) in Security, Social Sciences, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Law, International Relations, or a related field with at least two (2) years of relevant professional experience; OR
- A Master's degree in any of the above-mentioned disciplines from an accredited academic institution (listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database).
- Desirable experience in security programmes, risk assessments, operational safety, or investigations within the humanitarian, public, or private sectors.
- UNDSS certifications such as the Security Certification Programme (SCP), Security Analysis Practice and Process (SAPP), or Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments (SSAFE) are highly advantageous.
- Strong ability to collaborate with government security counterparts and diverse international teams.
- Demonstrated rational decision-making skills under pressure, accompanied by excellent written and oral communication abilities.
