Position Summary
The Legal Practitioner will serve as a trusted legal advisor to the business, offering expert guidance on corporate, commercial, employment, regulatory, contract, and litigation matters. The ideal candidate will seamlessly balance legal risk management with commercial business objectives, supporting contract negotiations, dispute resolution, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance while protecting the Group's interests at all times.
Key Responsibilities
As the Legal Counsel, you will manage a diverse portfolio, which includes:
- Corporate & Commercial Legal Advisory: Draft, negotiate, and manage full-lifecycle commercial agreements (service agreements, procurement, consultancy, joint ventures, NDAs, and MOUs) and provide practical legal advice to support strategic initiatives.
- Litigation & Dispute Management: Manage disputes, arbitration, and mediation processes. Liaise with external solicitors and regulatory agencies while developing solid strategies to protect company interests.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with applicable Nigerian laws, monitor relevant legislative changes, and develop proactive compliance policies.
- Corporate Governance & Secretariat Support: Coordinate Board and Management meetings, prepare resolutions, maintain statutory records, and handle filings with relevant regulatory authorities.
- Employment & Labour Law: Advise on labor law compliance, employment contracts, disciplinary processes, and industrial relations.
- Risk Management: Identify potential legal and regulatory risks across business operations and conduct thorough legal due diligence on transactions.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Success in this role will be measured by:
- The speed and quality of contract reviews and turnaround times.
- Effective resolution of legal disputes and litigation management.
- Adherence to regulatory compliance and corporate governance standards.
- Optimization of legal costs and high stakeholder satisfaction.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Law (LL.B) and Barrister-at-Law (B.L.). A Master of Laws (LL.M) is an added advantage. Must be Called to the Nigerian Bar.
- Professional Membership: Active membership in the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
- Experience: 7 to 15 years of post-call experience (with a preferred snapshot of 7–10+ years), with a strong background in corporate/commercial law practice or an in-house legal advisory role.
- Key Skills: Exceptional contract drafting, legal research, negotiation, dispute resolution, and stakeholder management capabilities.
