As the Head of Sustainability, you will be instrumental in overseeing and driving environmental sustainability and climate-related initiatives specifically within Dangote Fertiliser Limited (DFL). This strategic leadership position demands a visionary approach, ensuring that all sustainability efforts are seamlessly integrated with the broader Dangote Group ESG Strategy Framework, comply with stringent regulatory requirements, and actively contribute to the company's overarching sustainability objectives.
You will lead a dedicated team in conceptualizing, developing, and executing impactful sustainability programs, significantly enhancing Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) systems, and rigorously tracking ESG performance. Ensuring adherence to international environmental standards is paramount, as is fostering robust relationships with critical stakeholders, including regulators, development partners, and various internal departments. Your role will involve providing strategic oversight to the Board of Directors and Executive Management, ensuring the fulfillment of environmental and climate-related commitments across all operational jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Strategy Development & Implementation: Crafting and executing DFL’s sustainability strategy, with a sharp focus on climate change mitigation, carbon reduction, adaptation efforts, and ensuring compliance with international environmental standards such as UN SDGs, TCFD, GRI, ISSB, UNGC, and IFC Performance Standards.
- Leadership & Team Management: Guiding, mentoring, and developing a team of ESG professionals, fostering a collaborative environment, and building internal capacity through targeted training and workshops. You will provide expert strategic guidance to Top Management and Board members on all sustainability and climate-related matters.
- Integration & Compliance: Collaborating closely with HSSE, Environment, Engineering, Operations, and other internal teams to embed sustainability principles into core business processes and operational decision-making. You will monitor compliance with environmental regulations and ESG policies, fostering a strong culture of ESG compliance throughout the business.
- Climate Risk & Environmental Management: Leading the assessment and management of environmental and climate-related risks, including biodiversity impacts, water security, and emissions reduction. This involves conducting climate risk and vulnerability assessments and developing effective mitigation strategies, alongside overseeing baseline emissions assessments and setting ambitious reduction targets in line with Net Zero commitments.
- ESG Reporting & Performance Monitoring: Developing and maintaining the company’s GHG Data Inventory in alignment with ISO 14064, GHG Protocol, and IPCC standards to accurately track DFL’s carbon footprint across Scope 1, 2, and material Scope 3 emissions. You will design and implement ESG reporting templates, dashboards, and KPIs, leading the preparation of DFL’s Annual Sustainability Reports for timely, accurate, and board-ready disclosures.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy: Establishing and nurturing relationships with regulators, government agencies, and other key stakeholders to advance the company’s sustainability agenda, representing Dangote in external forums, and offering technical guidance on ESG matters.
- Resource Management & Special Projects: Overseeing budgets and resource allocation for sustainability initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives, and undertaking special assignments from Top Management.
Who We Are Looking For:
To thrive in this challenging yet rewarding role, you should possess:
- A minimum of ten (10) years of demonstrable experience in strategy, environmental sustainability, ESG reporting, climate risk management, and stakeholder materiality assessment within manufacturing, energy, or industrial sectors.
- Hands-on expertise in leading frameworks such as GRI, CDP, UNGC, IFRS S1 & S2, ISSB, and TCFD.
- A proven track record in GHG accounting (Scope 1, 2, and material Scope 3), science-based target setting, and developing enterprise-wide ESG and climate data management frameworks to enhance disclosure accuracy and reporting efficiency.
- Demonstrated experience in leading sustainability programs, HSSE integration, and guiding cross-functional teams to embed environmental and climate-related initiatives into core business processes.
- Experience engaging effectively with regulators, development partners, and internal stakeholders to ensure compliance, strengthen ESG disclosure readiness, and support strategic decision-making at Board and Executive levels.
- Practical experience in developing and assessing climate-related projects and decarbonization initiatives, including low-carbon investments, fleet transitions, carbon capture, and sustainable agriculture programs.
