We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Nutrition and Health Officer to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on the health and well-being of vulnerable populations in Katsina and Maiduguri.
The Opportunity: Nutrition and Health Officer
As a Nutrition and Health Officer, you will be instrumental in the day-to-day implementation, coordination, and successful delivery of our vital nutrition and health project activities. This role spans the entire project lifecycle, requiring a comprehensive approach to oversight, capacity building, and meticulous reporting. You will provide essential supervision to health facilities managed by State and Local Government Authorities (LGAs) and supported by ACF, ensuring the highest standards of care.
A key aspect of this position involves strengthening the capacity of Ministry of Health (MoH) healthcare workers through targeted training and continuous mentorship. Your commitment to timely monitoring, detailed reporting, and providing continuous updates on project progress and outcomes will be crucial to our collective success. This position reports directly to the Programme Manager – Health and Nutrition, with a proposed start date of August 2026.
Key Responsibilities: A Deep Dive
Mission 1: Nutrition and Health Situation Monitoring
You will play a crucial role in understanding and responding to the evolving health and nutrition landscape by:
- Updating and maintaining 5W/4W mapping tools for Health and Nutrition sectors monthly and sharing insights with the Programme Manager.
- Monitoring programme screening-based data on acute malnutrition and compiling health facility-based disease surveillance reports.
- Participating actively with the M&E team in supervising data collection for health and nutrition assessments.
- Liaising with nutrition and health assistants to regularly access and update community support group and health facility databases.
- Conducting ongoing capacity assessments of health workers in areas like CMAM, IMCI, reproductive health, and vaccination, identifying training and coaching needs.
- Conducting training and establishing 'Tom Brown' centers in health facility catchment areas for managing moderate acute malnutrition.
- Supporting the Programme Manager in organizing technical training for health workers (including LMIS, HMIS).
- Ensuring the effective use of quality assessment checklists and on-the-job coaching guidance.
- Reviewing financial, logistical, and HR needs monthly and quarterly.
- Ensuring health facilities have adequate supplies for uninterrupted healthcare services.
- Supporting the Programme Manager in organizing LGA-based coordination meetings and preparing individual monthly action plans.
Mission 2: Supervise LGA and Facility Level Activities
You will be responsible for supporting the project cycle management and ensuring project implementation aligns with donor proposals and international standards by:
- Ensuring all children and patients in ACF-supported facilities receive proper examination and treatment according to national protocols.
- Identifying and reporting gaps in WASH facilities to the Programme Manager.
- Ensuring the availability of essential nutrition & health supplies and data tools.
- Monitoring appropriate documentation, including IMCI and CMAM registers, growth monitoring cards, and ANC/PNC records.
- Identifying financial, logistic, and HR support needs and informing the Programme Manager for budget forecasting.
- Drafting and sharing monthly supply requests.
- Facilitating quarterly review meetings with government health managers at State/LGA levels.
- Developing and sharing a monthly monitoring and supervision plan for the LGA.
- Reporting specific monitoring findings with potential solutions to the Programme Manager.
- Identifying supply-side gaps during supervision visits and reporting for remedial action.
- Ensuring appropriate referrals for high-risk pregnancies, SAM with medical complications, and other conditions.
Mission 3: Training and Managing Programme Teams
Your leadership will be crucial in developing our Nutrition and Health Assistants through:
- Conducting twice-yearly assessments of the skills and performance of Nutrition and Health Assistants.
- Maintaining an individual monitoring & supervision plan for supervisees.
- Regularly following up on activity progress, challenges, and guiding necessary actions.
- Sharing training plans for identified needs with the Programme Manager in advance.
- Tracking and validating supervisees' daily attendance and submitting it to HR in a timely manner.
- Communicating with HR for staff meetings, performance reviews, appraisals, and leaves.
- Liaising with HR to provide orientation on ACF charter, core values, child safeguarding policy, and staff code of conduct.
- Ensuring rational use of medical equipment and stationery in health facilities.
- Ensuring Nutrition and Health Assistants utilize standard monitoring checklists during health facility visits.
Mission 4: Information Management, Reporting, and Coordination
You will ensure robust data management and effective communication by:
- Maintaining and updating databases for health workers, community health workers/volunteers, and trainings.
- Preparing a consolidated tracking tool for supportive supervision visits and on-job coaching sessions.
- Updating LGA and individual work plans.
- Using appropriate attendance sheets for coaching, workshops, and training, and sharing copies.
- Utilizing specific supervision checklists during visits and archiving filled checklists with summary reports monthly.
- Filling health evolution reports monthly for the LGA and sharing for consolidation.
- Supporting government health workers in preparing integrated disease surveillance reports and monthly facility-based DHIS2 reports.
- Providing summary analysis from LGA reports, including contextual changes, progress of training/supervision, quality of service, key challenges, and proposed solutions.
- Collecting, compiling, and sharing consumption reports from health facilities with the line manager, along with upcoming needs.
- Regularly reporting and coordinating with line management.
What We're Looking For:
We are searching for a committed professional who meets the following criteria:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, or other relevant qualifications with experience in Public Health and CMAM programming.
- Experience: A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in primary health care programs.
- Technical Skills: Excellent report-writing skills, including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Language: Fluent in both written and spoken English and Hausa.
- Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Leadership: Team management experience with similar programs.
- Qualities: Ability to observe and provide constructive feedback, and capacity to manage staff in accordance with local culture and organizational policies.
