The Vital Role of a Mental Health Support Worker
As a Mental Health Support Worker at Synapse Services, you will be an integral part of our multidisciplinary team, working closely with nurses and other clinicians. Your contributions will be crucial in ensuring the safety, comfort, and progress of individuals experiencing mental illness and using our mental health services. This role demands empathy, vigilance, and a proactive approach to patient care.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Clinical and Team Support: Providing essential support to nurses and other clinicians as they carry out their duties, fostering a collaborative care environment.
- Empathetic Personal Care: Assisting in the provision of safe and empathetic personal care, including maintaining personal hygiene (bathing, dressing), feeding, and ensuring patients' comfort.
- Creating a Welcoming Environment: Warmly welcoming new patients and actively facilitating a friendly and conducive environment to help them acclimatize to their new surroundings.
- Ensuring Patient Safety: Upholding the highest standards of patient safety and security within their living environment, ensuring patients are never left unattended whether in the facility or during external activities.
- Engagement and Interaction: Actively interacting with and supporting patients during therapeutic activities and recreational sessions, encouraging participation and engagement.
- Crisis Intervention: Assisting in the de-escalation and/or safe restraint of aggressive or violent patients when required, under expert guidance.
- Environmental Stewardship: Supervising the scheduled regular cleaning of patients’ rooms and shared areas across all shifts, contributing to a hygienic and orderly environment.
- Diligent Documentation: Completing all observation charts and handover checklists promptly and conscientiously, paying adequate attention to detail for accurate record-keeping.
- Facility Management: Ensuring electrical appliances are switched off when not in use, promptly reporting damages, and supervising repair and maintenance activities within the facility.
- Ad-hoc Duties: Performing any other duties as assigned by the Nurse or clinicians, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to team goals.
